Sennebogen North America announced the selection of Crane & Machinery Inc. as its distributor representative for Illinois and Ohio. Based in Bridgeview, IL, Crane & Machinery was established in 1977. Today, the company is focused on cranes, lifting, bulk and material handling equipment. The company employs 50 people, including 25 factory-trained service technicians. A few years ago, a single lane bridge in upstate New York was replaced. Crews Raise Crane for Oklahoma State Capitol Dome Construction →

At the job site about 100 ft. (30.4 m) in the air, workers are pounding at the walls of a small, concrete-ringed room. Tucked in the top floor of Oklahoma’s state capitol, they’re demolishing the solid concrete saucer dome that stood here only a few months ago. The Oklahoma state capitol, originally completed in 1917, was designed to have a dome similar to the one in Washington, D.C. But when construction began, the state realized it simply didn’t have the money to complete the dome, and a low concrete saucer was built instead.  Click for more...


Millions of Pounds of Concrete Barge Up the Monongahela River →

History was made in Pennsylvania on July 26 as people gathered along the Ohio and Monongahela (Mon) rivers to see for themselves that concrete really could float. The spectacle was definitely something to see as 22 million lbs. (9.9 million kg) of reinforced concrete slowly made a 27.5-mi. (44 km) journey up the river. Before there was Interstate 65 s1icing southward through the heart of Alabama, there was U.S. 31. It cuts all the way from Tennessee on the north to Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. To make the trip, highway travelers must cross the Alabama River between Prattville and Montgomery. The old turn-span bridge that served the highway for so long now has been replaced. Under a new modified design/build approach, the State of New Jersey and its contractor are way ahead of schedule on a $58-million bridge construction project in the center of the state. George A. Harms Construction Co., Howell, NJ, is erecting the four-lane Route 9 structure over the Raritan River between Woodbridge and Sayreville. Rogers Bridge Company Inc. and Mitchell Construction Co. Inc. of Atlanta, GA, have teamed up to complete a $27.9-million bridge and shoulder widening project along Interstate 16 in Laurens and Treutlen counties. Reeves Construction of East Dublin, GA, also plays a key role in the effort as the project’s paving contractor. The R. R. Dawson Bridge Company is the prime contractor on construction of a bridge across the Tuscaloosa River, bypassing the city of Tuscaloosa, AL, and has just been awarded a joint venture contract with RaCon Inc. to construct the rest of the bridge. “We actually started the job in June of 2000,” said Bob Dawson, company owner. “We’re close to 50 percent done. Contractors Pump Up Capability of Atlanta Waste Facility →

The city of Atlanta, GA, is taking a proactive approach in keeping its sewage system and pumping stations in the best working condition possible. In a recently completed job, a sewage pumping station rehab project at Utoy Waste Treatment Facility, was done by Archer Western of Atlanta, GA, and the subcontractor Gould & Associates-NES Pumping Systems, also of Atlanta, GA, and Houston, TX. “We’re putting in the new valves where the flow comes in on four different pumps, that are 30 in.,” explained Larry Appling of Archer Western. The project required that the pump station be shut down during the rehab which required a bypass route for the sewage. Gould & Associates subcontracted a 50-million gallon per day (mgd) bypass on this pump station. The job was set up with seven pumps.  Click for more...

Scott Bridge Calls Specialist for Consultation on U.S. 31 Project →

The Alabama Department of Transportation has awarded a $9.7-million contract to Scott Bridge Company Inc. for work on U.S. 31 in Montgomery, Elmore and Autauga counties. Work on the contract, which involves roadwork and relief bridge replacement over the Alabama River, began in May 1999. The construction on U.S. 31 extends two miles from milepost 185 to milepost 187, including the main bridge over the Alabama River, which spans 2,310 ft.  Click for more...

The Manitowoc Company Inc. was recently featured in a Forbes magazine article on the manufacturers of "some of America’s most impressive heavy machinery."
