Grove's Heavy-Duty Jib Equips GRT9165 Rough-Terrain Crane for Precast Work →

Grove is offering a new heavy-duty jib extension for the Grove GRT9165 rough-terrain crane that increases the 165 ton crane's utilization abilities. The jib is 12.5 ft. long and designed with two sheaves, for up to four parts of line, and is hydraulically offsettable from 0 to 50 degrees. The compact but stout jib has a max lifting capacity of 68,600 lbs. The new jib has up to 20 percent greater capacities on average than its closest competition. Click for more...

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has released an updated standard on mobile and locomotive cranes that includes a clear definition of the role a qualified rigger plays in a lifting operation. The standard now requires the presence of one qualified rigger any time a mobile crane more than 2,000 lbs. capacity is at work. "Having a qualified rigger present on a job site during a lift is not just a good idea; it is also an OSHA and ASME requirement when mobile cranes are involved," said Tony Fiscelli of Lifting Gear Hire (LGH). Nordic Crane Buys Five Grove Five-Axle Cranes →

Scandinavian rental company Nordic Crane has taken delivery of five new Grove all-terrain cranes — all five-axle units — to supplement its regional fleet. Four are based at the company's Norwegian operations, while one is at the company's Swedish facility. There are two 165 ton capacity GMK5150L-1 cranes and three 275 ton capacity GMK5250XL-1 cranes. New Boom Inserts Expand Manitowoc MLC300 Reach for Wind Turbine Work →

Manitowoc is expanding its boom insert offering with the new wide boom plus kit for its MLC300 lattice-boom crawler crane. The new inserts will give crane operators extra reach by lengthening their booms up to 429.8 ft. (131 m) when used in combination with the VPC-MAX and extended upper boom points. They will be particularly useful for assembling wind turbines, according to the manufacturer. Crane That Helped Avert Mining Disaster 20 Years Ago →

Twenty years ago, all eyes were on a farm in Somerset County, Pa., as a daring rescue took place for nine coal miners trapped 250 feet underground. On July 24, 2002, the miners had accidentally tapped into a poorly documented abandoned mine, flooding their own mine with water and blocking their exit. Cold, wet and running out of air, for 77 hours spread across parts of five days, the nation was transfixed by the attempt to reach them, an event that came to be known as the Quecreek mine rescue.
